Syllabus I: Instructions for Use

Syllabus I is designed for teachers who may want to use my vocabulary text Words Matter along with Reading for Results. However, teachers who want to move through the latter text quickly and without using an accompanying vocabulary textbook can just eliminate the vocabulary portions from the syllabus and follow the sequence of assignments for Reading for Results.

Syllabus I assumes that every class runs like clock work—students are perpetually attentive and ready and willing to do a lot of homework while instructors' explanations are always crystal clear and never need to be repeated. It also assumes that students won't need to complete all the items in every exercise because they get the point after only partial completion. The syllabus is designed for instructors intent on getting their students through the entire book and ready for a second-semester course in critical thinking. The underlying assumption is that the syllabus will not prove realistic in its entirety, but that it is easier to eliminate material from the syllabus rather than add once you have a general sequence of instruction.

Teachers who are nevertheless confident that the syllabus will work as designed will be able to use a printout of the file directly for copying and distribution in class—all they have to add are the course name and number as well as dates in the blanks left for that purpose.

Note: The syllabus is in the form of a .pdf file. To read and print this file, teachers will need to have the Acrobat Reader installed on their computer. The Reader can be downloaded for free from the Adobe website.
